Chapter 10
Mount Karag
“Well, this sucks,” Alya said when the first large drop pelted her from the sky. She looked up to make sure it wasn’t a bird. The sky was gray and the wind had picked up.
“Maybe we should stop for a bit,” Almon pulled his soaking hair into a ponytail with a thin strip of leather.
“Yeah, maybe we should find someplace dry?” Bram’s feet were sliding in the mud, water in the puddles covered his boots.
“You might want to be careful,” Rein grinned at Bram, “we wouldn’t want you to drown before you get to meet your daughter.” He laughed.
“Fuck off,” Bram growled.
This made Rein laugh even louder, he flung his head back and let the water run over his face. A loud clap of thunder and a flash of lightning caused muscles in Rein’s back to stiffen.
The horses whinnied their disapproval of sudden change in weather conditions. Rein and Almon held tightly to the horse’s reins and tried to remain calm.
Walking under all these trees might not be such a good idea in a storm. “Okay, we’ll find a dry spot.” Rein patted his horse.
“Up there,” Almon pointed to a small opening in the side of the hillside.
They tied the horses to small trees just outside the opening with enough rope that they could walk inside out of the rain.
The opening didn’t go back very far but they could build a small fire and wait for the storm to pass. Alya sat shivering on a rock rubbing her hands up and down on her bare arms.
Rein sat next to her and wrapped an arm around her shoulder. She leaned in closer soaking up as much of his body heat as she could.
“I forgot how cold it gets on the mainland.” Alya stretched her hands out in front of her to feel the warmth of the small fire.
“How long has it been?” Bram asked, trying to keep his eyes from her breasts. It was hard with her nipples were poking through the thin cloth of her shirt.
She looked at Almon who was throwing sticks into the fire. “I haven’t been home for over six months.” She looked away quickly when Almon caught her gaze. “Not since… never mind.”
“Not since what?” Bram was intrigued.
“Our parents wanted her to marry prince Volrek, to bring our tribes together. On the night before their wedding, she took off.” Almon said. “Suppose I know why” He looked over at Rein and raised an eyebrow.
“It wasn’t fair,” Alya stood up. “They knew I didn’t want to marry him, he was horrible, and there was someone else…”
“He wasn’t that bad and it would have put an end to the fighting.” Almon dropped a handful of twigs into the fire.
“It would have made Lord Tariel the ruler of both tribes,” Alya stood her ground.
“At least no more of our people would have had to die,” Almon shouted.
“Sorry I asked,” Bram interrupted.
“Can we go now?” Alya turned to face Rein.
“The rain is getting worse and it’ll be dark soon.
